Wax Donut Records’ New Wave Donut LP Sees Night Goat, Wipes, Bovine Nightmares, And Others...

As Wax Donut Records prepares to release its latest tribute album, New Wave Donut – contemporary noise rock and similar acts covering songs from pioneers of the new wave movement – Treble is hosting an exclusive double-premiere, with Science Man and their cover of Suburban Lawns’ “Gossip” and Bovine Nightmares’ cover of Eurythmics’ “Here Comes The Rain Again”

Owing to the label’s tagline, “For the odd, the noisy, the heavy,” the compilation features eight pummeling versions of classic songs from the late-‘70s to mid-‘80s, uniting a diverse array of punk and metal bands from across the United States. New Wave Donut features two bands with a longstanding relationship to the label – Night Goat and Bovine Nightmares – as well as several fresh faces from the annals of Bandcamp including Naw, Wipes, Science Man, The Kronk Men, Basement Family, and Glose.

The collected tracks were mastered by Steve Glaze at Tonefreq, and the cover art for V/A: New Wave Donut was created by Chris Bentley (Night Goat).

On their cover of Suburban Lawns’ “Gossip,” John Toohill of Science Man reveals, “I only discovered Suburban Lawns in the last five or ten years when reissues of their sole LP started popping up. Wild and fun new-wave on the surface with a bit of a demented, art-punk underbelly that occasionally pushes it to uncomfortably strange. I can see why they didn’t get more popular. So, when Morey asked me to do a cover for this comp, ‘Gossip’ seemed like the perfect sonic and lyrical image to project through our hardcore lens.”

Bovine Nightmares’ Erikk The Broken adds about their cover of Eurythmics “Here Comes The Rain Again,” “Just as readily as rainwater can impregnate a garden before famine, can a single day bounce one between ecstasy and despair, festering like a morning dew on a field lush with rot.”

Treble writes, “…Wax Donut Records is releasing a covers compilation called New Wave Donut, which features contemporary heavy bands taking on songs from the new wave and post-punk era of the early ’80s. Two tracks have already been released from the compilation, and today, two more make their debut. Noisy Buffalo hardcore group Science Man offer up a manic and searing take on Suburban Lawns’ ‘Gossip,’ while Pennsylvania avant metal troupe Bovine Nightmares offer a warped and gothic metal take on Eurythmics’ ‘Here Comes the Rain Again.’”

New Wave Donut will be released March 1st as a very limited edition 12” LP pressed on random colors available for preorder exclusively through Wax Donut where Night Goat’s cover of Siouxsie And The Banshees’ “Bring Me The Head Of The Preacher Man” and Glose’s rendition of Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” are streaming HERE.

Digital downloads will be available as singles from each of the individual bands and all songs are expected to appear on streaming services as well.

Wax Donut Records’ Morey Straus reveals, “Anyone who knows me well will tell you that I’m a total nut for the new wave and post-punk music of the late-‘70s to mid-‘80s. So, when I was ready to organize a new tribute comp, the idea was quickly cemented in my mind. I did what I’ve done with past tribute projects; I reached out to some of my favorite active bands in the heavy-ish music sphere to see who might have time and interest. I filled all the slots for this one quickly.”

He continues, “The bands had almost total freedom of song choices. My only criteria for acceptance were that they considered their choice to be part of the original new wave era (in the broadest sense of the label), and that I’d only take one song from any given artist. I really enjoyed watching the song selections come in for this. While only a couple of my favorites made it into the list, I knew I would not be disappointed. And my gut was right. The heavy lens applied by these bands has given me a new appreciation for all of these tracks. I hope you enjoy these re-imagined versions as much as I do. This comp is dedicated to all of the amazing artists who created the first new wave / post-punk era, and to all of the great underground artists producing music today.”
